GirlTECH Hosts AAUW Event at ACCESS

Picture of Cynthia Lanius giving a talk GirlTECH hosted thirty award-winning teachers from across the country at the Alliance Center for Collaboration, Education, Science and Software (ACCESS) in Arlington, VA on July 24 of a "Women in Technology" Workshop. The teachers, who were taking part in a week-long Institute hosted by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), met with researchers involved in the Education, Outreach and Training program of the Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure EOT-PACI).

Janet Thot-Thompson, Associate Director, ACCESS, welcomed the teachers and gave them an overview of the center and its work. National Science Foundation Program Directors Caroline Wardle and Ruta Sevo then talked to the teachers about programs that they fund to address the severe underrepresentation of women in technology careers and college programs.

Picture of the workshopUsing the ACCESS GRID, Raquell Holmes, Boston University, and An Redelfs, San Diego Supercomputer Center, talked about their experiences in technology careers, job opportunities for young women in technology, and other relevant issues. All 30 techers will be involved in AAUW-funded fellowhip projects with girls during the upcoming school year. For more information on this event see Women in Technology Workshop or News Coverage.

Cynthia Lanius, Director of GirlTECH, an EOT-PACI intiative to encourge girls to pursue their interests in technology and science, closed the session with a hands-on demosnstration of technology-related web resources for girls and women.
