GirlTECH Hosts AAUW Event at ACCESS
GirlTECH hosted twenty award-winning teachers from across the country
at the Alliance Center for Collaboration,
Education, Science and Software (ACCESS) in Arlington, VA on July
24. The teachers, who were taking part in a week-long Institute hosted
by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), met with researchers
involved in the Education, Outreach and Training
program of the Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure
EOT-PACI). Cynthia Lanius, Director of GirlTECH, an EOT-PACI
intiative to encourge girls to pursue their interests in technology and
science, talked to the teachers about the severe underrpresentation of
women in technology careers and college programs. The teachers also were
given strategies to help them effectively teach and counsel girls on using
technology and pursuing technology careers.
The visit also included a hands-on demonstration of technology-related
web resouces for girls and women and a virtual panel of women from the
two PACI partnerships (the Alliance and NPACI) who talked about their
experiences in technology careers, job opportunities for young women in
technology, and otherrelevant issues. All 20 teachers will be involved
in AAUW-funded fellowship projects with girls during the upcoming school
year. For more information on this event see Women
in Technology Workshop or News
