GirlTECH Hosts AAUW Event at ACCESS

Picture of Cynthia Lanius giving a talk GirlTECH hosted twenty award-winning teachers from across the country at the Alliance Center for Collaboration, Education, Science and Software (ACCESS) in Arlington, VA on July 24. The teachers, who were taking part in a week-long Institute hosted by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), met with researchers involved in the Education, Outreach and Training program of the Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure EOT-PACI). Cynthia Lanius, Director of GirlTECH, an EOT-PACI intiative to encourge girls to pursue their interests in technology and science, talked to the teachers about the severe underrpresentation of women in technology careers and college programs. The teachers also were given strategies to help them effectively teach and counsel girls on using technology and pursuing technology careers. Picture of the workshop
The visit also included a hands-on demonstration of technology-related web resouces for girls and women and a virtual panel of women from the two PACI partnerships (the Alliance and NPACI) who talked about their experiences in technology careers, job opportunities for young women in technology, and otherrelevant issues. All 20 teachers will be involved in AAUW-funded fellowship projects with girls during the upcoming school year.
