Rice University hosted the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Engineering and Science Underrepresented Minority Ph.D. Recruitment and Retention Conference. The goal of this conference was to provide Sloan Minority Program grantees an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the current issues, challenges, and problems that affect minority graduate education, share ideas and solutions with the community of scholars working on this national-agenda issue, and thereby strengthen and enhance their programs.Topics for Presentations and Discussion

Registration, Lodging and Transportation
The Sloan Foundation has underwritten conference costs, transportation, food, and 2 nights lodging for all Sloan minority program grantees only. For others, we will supply meals during the conference, but all other expenses must be covered by the conference attendees. The conference schedule was designed for you to arrive on Wednesday evening and depart early Friday afternoon. Follow the directions below to arrange accomodations.
- Hotel Information
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Crowne Plaza - Medical Center. Please call 713-797-1110 by February 27, 1999 to make reservations. Mention that you are with the Sloan Conference.
- Air Transportation
Call Miriam at All Season's Travel at 800-666-5555 to book your plane reservations. Tell her that you are with the Sloan Conference. She will have a list of attendees and will charge the flight to our account.
- Ground Transportation We are asking everyone to use the Airport Express Shuttle. (Other ground transportation will not be reimbursed if it exceeds the cost of the Shuttle).
- Go to the baggage claim area at Hobby or Bush Intercontinental Airport.
- Go to the Ground Transportation Counter to buy your ticket to the Crowne Plaza - Medical Center.
Ticket price and trip length:
- $12 from Hobby Airport, thirty minutes
- $17 from Bush Intercontinental Airport, one hour
- The Ground Transportation Counter clerk will tell you where to wait for the Airport Express shuttle.
- The shuttle will take you to the Crowne Plaza - Medical Center.
- Transportation from the Crowne Plaza - Medical Center Hotel to Rice
Rice University buses will shuttle attendees between the hotel and the conference site, Duncan Hall at Rice University. Buses will pick up and drop off passengers right at the door of both the hotel and Duncan Hall.
