| Here's
where you can get answers to all those questions you've been wanting
to ask about the CS-CAMP program. If you don't see your question here,
email me
and ask the question, and we'll post the answer on this page (anonymously,
of course). |

Q -- Exactly what
is CS-CAMP?
|
| |
A -- CS-CAMP is
a two-week summer program at Rice University, designed for high
school females. The purpose of the program is to prepare them so
they will succeed with confidence and enthusiasm when they take
computer science courses at their high school the next school year.
This year the program will be held from June 20th to June 30th, 2004.
The camp is two weeks long. Nine teams of
six girls, from nine Houston ISD high schools, will attend. During the camp, we will work on community-building,
computer career options, mentoring activities, and will work hard,
but will have lots of fun.
The program doesn't stop
there, either. All through the next school year, there will be opportunities
to continue to sharpen the skills you learned. We will have regular
follow-up sessions, and the students who attend will be part of a listserv where they will be able to stay in contact with each other later.
More general information
about the program is available on the CS-CAMP brochure. If you have
Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, you can read
a copy of the brochure here.

|
Q -- What will the
hours and dates for the summer camp be?
|
| |
A -- It begins on Monday, June
20th, and ends on Thursday, June 30th.
Camp will begin each day at 9:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM. The computer
lab will be open for an extra hour (from 4:00 to 5:00 PM), in case
some of the girls want to stay and work on projects a little longer.
|
| Q -- Will
we be staying (overnight) on the Rice campus? |
| |
A -- No, the camp
is just held during the day, so someone will have to bring the students
to Rice each morning and pick them up each afternoon.
|
| Q -- Where
is the camp located on the Rice campus? |
| |
A -- Excellent
question. The camp will start inside Duncan Hall (which is on the
Eastern side of the campus) every morning, in Room 1070. Sometimes
all of the students and teachers will go from there to smaller classrooms,
sometimes to one of the computer labs, or sometimes they will stay
in Room 1070. The most important thing to remember is to be at Duncan
Hall, Room 1070, every morning. Here are some
details about how to get here.
|
| Q -- If
my mom is going to drop me off, what is the closest entrance to Duncan
Hall? |
| |
A -- Take a look
at the map at this web address, and you can see where the entrances
are.
http://www.rice.edu/maps/colormap.pdf
Duncan Hall is Building 29 on the map. Entrances 1, 2, and 16 are
the closest ones to Duncan Hall, about a two to four-minute walk
away.
If your mom drops you at Entrance 12 or Entrance 8, you will be
close to the shuttle bus that circles the campus' Inner Loop Drive
about every ten minutes. Just walk to one of the three bus stops
from the entrance, catch the shuttle, and tell the bus driver you
want to get off at Duncan Hall.
Your mom won't be able to park at the entrances when she picks
you up in the afternoon, though. There isn't any place to park on
the streets. They are major roads. She can park in the free area
near the stadium, and you can easily walk to her car from the shuttle.
She can also park near Duncan Hall, on the Inner Loop, for ten minutes
or so, but there's not a tremendous amount of space there.
If you're driving yourself, park in the free parking at Entrance 10
(on Greenbriar Drive). There's a bus stop there also, but that shuttledoesn't begin running until 8:30 AM, and stopps running at 4:00 PM, when we let out for the day.. It's a little
further away from Duncan, so the bus doesn't run quite as often
as the Inner Loop bus (maybe every twelve minutes), but
there's lots of free parking there, and you can easily walk from there to the shuttle stop in the Resident Student Lot. Look at this other
parking map and roll your cursor over the parking icons on the left
side of the map (it's interactive) to get a good idea where everything
is.

| Q -- Will
we have homework? |
| |
A -- No. It's
summer.
Sorry,
I couldn't resist. Currently, there are no plans to assign homework.
You should be able to finish each day's projects that day. If you
want a little extra work, though, don't forget that the labs will
be open an extra hour at the end of each day.
|
| Q -- What
will we do in class and the lab? |
| |
A -- We won't always
be in the class or the computer labs. Sometimes we'll be meeting people
who are involved in the computer sciences, and sometimes we'll be
doing some other things. We will be in class or the labs a lot of
the time, though. While we're there, we'll do some group work in the
computer labs, design and write computer programs to run graphical
user interfaces, play games, and do some things with our brains that
computers normally do.
|
| Q -- Do
I need to bring my own lunch? |
| |
A -- No. We'll
provide lunch for you each day. We'll also have a nice breakfast
on the first Monday morning (the 20th), and we'll start serving that about 8:30 AM, and start the first day of camp at 9:00 AM..
|
| Q -- Do
you have a dress code? |
| |
A -- No, there's
no dress code. Just dress comfortably. We'll be indoors
a lot of the time, and Duncan Hall and the computer labs are air conditioned,
so just come prepared for that, but we'll be outside occasionally too, so wear layers.
