If it's called Computer Science, is it about technology, or is it about science? Some people actually feel it should be called Computational Science, because they feel it's more about what you can do with the technology than about the technology itself. Some people feel that university Computer Science departments should be a part of the Math Department, some people think it should be part of the Science Department, and others who feel it should be part of a university's Technology Department. The more you search for a definition, the more different definitions you will find. So, the answer to the question depends on who you're talking to. One thing you can be sure of, this is such a new field that there will be many more changes of mind in the future.

To understand why there is sometimes a little confusion about it, it helps to look at some of the different viewpoints. Here are some websites about the subject of Computer Science.

How about this definition from Dr. Keith Cooper, the Department Chair of Rice University's Computer Science Department?

"Computer Science is the academic discipline that encompasses the design of computers and the software that runs on them.

Computer Science has many distinct subareas, including computer architecture, software systems, graphics, robotics, database systems, information retrieval, artificial intelligence, and computational geometry."

That about says it all, huh?
